Spreading Love Through Art: Hopewell Elementary's Valentine's Day Tradition

The students of Hopewell Elementary continued the tradition of creating Valentine’s for area nursing homes and assisted living facilities for the fourth year in a row. This has become a favorite service learning project for our students. Every child in the school created a one of a kind work of art with a Valentine theme. Students used a variety of coloring materials as well as paint and collage items. We approached the project as if they were creating a piece of art a resident at the facility might enjoy displaying in their room. The students were very inspired with their creations. We discussed how their artwork would not be returned to them, but hopefully the feeling of brightening someone’s day would replace the ability to keep their work. The kids were excited and more than willing to share their creativity with others.

The Valentine’s were placed in festive bags and several staff members helped deliver them. We were able to create artwork for nine nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the Archdale/Trinity and Asheboro areas including, Shannon Gray (135), North Pointe Archdale (50), North Pointe Asheboro (52), Graybrier (105), Piedmont Crossing (70), Crossroad (70), Whitestone (35) and Pennybyrn (50). The deliveries were well received by the front desk staff and we sure hope the residents enjoy receiving them as much as we enjoyed creating them!
