Hopewell Elementary Fourth Graders Visit NC Zoo

During an exciting field trip to the NC Zoo in Asheboro, the fourth graders at Hopewell Elementary School explored diverse animal habitats while learning how each environment supports its inhabitants. Students and teachers alike marveled at the habitats connecting their observations to the importance of animal adaptations they had discussed in class.

4th graders in North Carolina can use what they learn about animal adaptations to understand how animals survive in their homes! They can explore how animals have special features, like a chameleon changing colors to hide or a penguin's thick feathers to keep warm.

Students can go outside to observe local animals or visit a zoo to see these adaptations in action. They can create fun projects, like drawing or building models of animals and showing how their adaptations help them find food and stay safe. By sharing what they learn with their classmates, they can become mini-experts on animals and help everyone appreciate how amazing nature is!

Students created a “mind map” the next day following our NC Zoo Field trip to recreate the route he/she took in their adventure when observing around the zoo.
