Dr. Susan Chappell, Principal of Eastern Randolph High School, has been named one of six semi-finalists for the regional Principal of the Year award. As a semi finalist, she will continue to move forward in the process that determines Principal of the Year for the state of North Carolina.
Once a principal becomes a semi-finalist for the North Carolina Principal of the Year award, they undergo a more thorough evaluation process. Here’s what typically happens next:
Site Visit: A team from the North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (NCASCD) or another relevant organization visits the semi-finalist's school. During this visit, they observe the principal's leadership in action, including their interactions with staff, students, and the school community. The visit often includes interviews with teachers, students, parents, and district leaders to assess the principal's effectiveness and impact.
Comprehensive Review: The selection committee reviews a portfolio submitted by the principal. This portfolio includes documentation of the principal’s leadership achievements, student performance data, school improvement initiatives, and other evidence of success in creating a positive learning environment.
Interviews: The semi-finalists may be required to participate in an in-depth interview with the selection committee, where they discuss their leadership philosophy, achievements, and vision for the future of education.
Finalist Selection: Based on the site visit, portfolio review, and interview, a smaller group of finalists is chosen from the semi-finalists. These finalists are then considered for the title of North Carolina Principal of the Year.
Announcement and Award Ceremony: The winner is announced at a formal event, and the selected principal receives the Wells Fargo Principal of the Year award. This includes recognition, a trophy, and the honor of representing North Carolina at the national level.
The process is designed to thoroughly assess the leadership, accomplishments, and impact of the principal, ensuring that the final awardee exemplifies the qualities of excellence in education and leadership.
