At Level Cross Elementary, the Kindergarten teachers did a week long lesson on voting as part of their Social Studies Unit. They explained the requirements for voting as an adult (US citizen and what that means, being 18+, etc). They had the students vote on their favorite ice cream. They created requirements that in order to vote they had to be a citizen of their room and be over 5 yrs old. They didn’t campaign because they all knew what chocolate and vanilla ice cream had to offer them already. The teachers set up voting booths with ballots. Everyone casted their vote in secret and when they were all together they counted their votes. In the combined kindergarten/first grade class, the first graders made tally marks and bar graphs. Afterward, they explained these concepts to the kindergarteners. After all the hard work, they enjoyed their ice cream.
