Trinity, NC – Dylan Smith, the agriculture teacher at Trinity Middle, is turning the school into a thriving agricultural hub. With a passion for farming and a dedication to his students, Smith has started an FFA chapter, raised chickens and rabbits for the school, and taken care of the greenhouse.
"I wanted to create a space where students could learn about agriculture firsthand," Smith explained. "By raising animals and tending to the greenhouse, they can see the entire process from start to finish."
The FFA chapter, under Smith's guidance, has been a resounding success. Students have participated in various agricultural competitions, including livestock shows and public speaking events. They've also learned about important agricultural issues like sustainability and food safety.
Smith's efforts to raise chickens and rabbits have also taught students about animal husbandry. The students have been responsible for caring for the animals, ensuring they have adequate food, water, and shelter.
The greenhouse (cold frame) has been transformed into a productive space where students grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. They've learned about planting, fertilizing, and harvesting crops.
Smith's dedication to his students and his passion for agriculture have made a significant impact on the school community. He's inspiring the next generation of farmers and agricultural leaders while also providing students with valuable hands-on learning experiences.
